The First 24 Hours After Water Damage: A Homeowner's Checklist

Water damage is a race against the clock. Clean water becomes contaminated within roughly 24 to 48 hours, drywall wicks moisture upward long after the surface looks dry, and mold can begin colonizing damp organic material in as little as two days.

Start with safety. If water is near outlets, panels or light fixtures, shut power off at the breaker before entering the area. Then stop the source — the main shutoff valve for a supply line break, or the appliance valve for a washer, dishwasher or water heater failure.

Document everything before you move anything. Photograph and video every affected room, including standing water depth, wet baseboards, ceiling stains and damaged contents. Insurance adjusters rely on this record, and it is nearly impossible to recreate after extraction begins.

Remove what you can move. Lift furniture onto blocks or foil, pull area rugs off wet flooring, and get books, electronics and documents out of the affected space. Do not use a household vacuum on standing water, and do not run ceiling fans in a room that may have contaminated water.

Call a certified restoration team early. Professional extraction, structural drying with commercial air movers and dehumidifiers, and moisture mapping with meters and thermal imaging are what prevent hidden damage inside wall cavities and under flooring.

Finally, notify your insurance carrier and keep a written log of every call, every contractor and every expense. Our team documents readings daily and shares that record with your adjuster so the claim moves without guesswork.
