Sewage Backup: Why Category 3 Water Is a Health Emergency
Restoration classifies water in three categories. Category 1 is clean supply water, Category 2 is greywater from appliances, and Category 3 — blackwater — contains bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. Sewage backups are always Category 3.
Time changes the category. Clean water sitting in a structure for two days degrades to Category 2 or 3, which is why a delayed response turns a straightforward dry-out into a demolition and disinfection project.
Occupants should leave the affected area, keep children and pets out, and avoid running any water that drains into the affected line. Do not attempt to clean contaminated materials yourself; porous items such as carpet, pad, drywall and insulation that contacted blackwater generally cannot be salvaged.
Professional response starts with containment and personal protective equipment, then extraction, controlled removal of unsalvageable materials, aggressive cleaning of remaining structure, and antimicrobial application. Air is filtered with HEPA scrubbers throughout.
Only after contamination is removed does drying begin, with monitored moisture readings until the structure returns to dry standard. Clearance documentation matters here, particularly for rental properties and commercial spaces.
We are available 24/7 for sewage losses, and we coordinate directly with insurance carriers on scope and documentation.
